Buying Guide: Choosing the Right Fel-Pro Gasket
Head Gaskets (MLS vs. Composite)
Fel-Pro manufactures head gaskets for every application. For modern aluminum engines and high-compression builds, Fel-Pro Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) gaskets are required to accommodate the thermal expansion of the engine block. For older cast-iron engines, traditional composite or Printoseal® gaskets provide excellent conformability to imperfect surfaces.
PermaDry® & PermaDryPlus®
Stop fighting messy silicone. Fel-Pro PermaDry gaskets are molded from premium silicone rubber wrapped around a rigid carrier. They are designed to be installed completely dry, preventing over-tightening and eliminating the cure time associated with RTV sealants. They are the ultimate solution for leaky valve covers and oil pans.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to use RTV silicone with a Fel-Pro gasket?
In most cases, no. Fel-Pro specifically engineers their PermaDry, PermaDryPlus, and Printoseal gaskets to be installed clean and dry. Adding RTV silicone to these gaskets acts as a lubricant, causing the gasket to split or slip out of place when torqued. Only use RTV in the specific corners or joints indicated by the factory service manual.
Can I reuse a Fel-Pro MLS head gasket?
No. Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) head gaskets feature a special embossed design that permanently crushes to create a seal when you torque the cylinder head down. Once the torque is released, the embossed ridges cannot spring back to their original height. You must use a new head gasket every time the head is removed.
